Ah, Save as. It's a command as old as time itself, and it should be pretty obvious what it does. But Adobe's latest Photoshop update seems to have turned the simple saving process into a minefield of confusion – and users aren't happy about it.
As of this month's 22.4 update for Photoshop on macOS, the Save As command is no longer able to save in non-layered formats such as JPEG and PNG. To do that, you'll now have to select a different option, Save a Copy. (If you're new to Photoshop, check out the best Creative Cloud deals).
If the file is in CMYK, you can't save as.png PNG is RGB so the photoshop file as to be in RGB. Unless you export for web, it will make a RGB out of the CMYK. Didn't know this, thank you. I worked on a CMYK file because i wanted to print it so that's the problem.
Hi, I’m trying to set up a script to save a.psd file with a cutout in it as a png with a dialog box that allows the user to put the first name, last name and team in the box and then save it in the naming convention.
In the feature summary for the release, Adobe explains that “Save a Copy automatically creates a copy of your work and allows you to export and share in your desired file format like JPEG, EPS, and so on, without overwriting the original file and protecting your data in the process.”
Describing the rationale behind the change to PetaPixel, Adobe explained that its hand was actually forced by Apple: “The new Save a Copy option in the File dropdown menu of Photoshop addresses a change in macOS 10.15.x and later, which eliminated the ability to manipulate aspects of the Save As dialog.”
But even if Adobe didn't have a choice in the matter, it seems Photoshop users aren't happy about the development:
Why do Photoshop have to change things that have been that way for decades? It takes me years to relearn them.First it was the way things scale, and now I have to hit alt apple S instead of shift apple S to 'Save a Copy'. It'll be 2024 by the time I've got used to thisMay 18, 2021
Whyyyyy Photoshop, every time I go to export I click 'Save as' due to habit. You have conditioned me, why must we change to 'Save as copy' :( @PhotoshopMay 19, 2021
When you update your Photoshop and they remove the save as JPEG option for layered PSD files!! WTF ?#photoshopfail #photoshop pic.twitter.com/zkW3YEa89WMay 19, 2021
It's hard not to feel a little sorry for Adobe here – the company has responded to several of the complaining tweets explaining that it was Apple's removal of the API that forced it to implement the change. But hey, an extra click is an extra click – and time is money for creatives.
Still, we reckon it won't be long until most users get used to having to select Save a copy when they're after a JPEG. And besides, as these weird Photoshop habits show, not every designer uses the software as efficiently as possible as it is.

As of May 2021 Photoshop release Version 22.4 – Adobe made a crazy change to the “Save As” command. Rather than continuing to act as it was. Letting you save your work in all kind of different file types, the new function is limited. To solve the Problem, Adobe added a new save feature called “Save a Copy” to the traditional “Save” and “Save As” commands. I tried to save a Copy as a PNG file, but Photoshop did not show me any PNG selection. In this Article I show you, how you can get back the list with all the file types and if you run into the same issue like me. How to get back does missing selections.

What happened to save as JPEG in Photoshop?
In addition to Save and Save As you have the new option Save a Copy. Inside of Save a Copy in the dropdown menu, you will see all the File Types that you where used to see.
What happened if i still can’t see JPEG or PNG in Photoshop?
In my case, the solution was to change to the RGB color mode:
Go to: Image/Mode and change it to RGB Color
BONUS: Go back to how it was with: “legacy Save As options”
With Photoshop 22.4.2, you can revert to the legacy Save As workflows by using the following preferences options.
Photoshop Png Save Option Missing
Enable legacy Save As
You can both revert to the legacy Save As workflow and/or omit the addended “copy” when saving as a copy, if desired.
To find these new preference options, navigate to:
macOS: The Save As and Save a Copy options will now both open the legacy save dialog enabling the Save As options that were available in Photoshop v22.3 and earlier, including the As a Copy checkbox. With the legacy workflow enabled, if you use the Save a copy option to save your Photoshop file, the As a Copy checkbox will be turned on by default. When selecting the Enable legacy “Save As” option in preferences on macOS, you will receive a warning dialog alerting you to the risk of overwriting files that arises when using the legacy Save As workflow, as “copy” will no longer be interactively appended to the filename. Because of this, when selecting the Enable legacy “Save As” preference the Do not append “copy” to filename when saving a copy preference will automatically become enabled and cannot be turned off unless the Enable legacy “Save As” preference is turned off.
Windows: The Enable legacy “Save As” preference operates the save as workflow as it originally did, including the interactive appending of “copy” to the filenames when appropriate. Hence, you will not see a warning alert when turning on the legacy preference on Windows. Additionally, since the legacy Save As workflow can append “copy” to filenames, you will not see a warning alert and the Do not append ‘copy’ to filename when saving a copy preference option can be turned on or off based on your requirement.
